There has never been a better time than right now to gain energy independence from the utility companies.      During the day, you may end up creating more electricity than you need for your home, and this will cause your meter to spin backwards.  That's right, backwards!  When your meter is going the opposite direction, you are actually sending electricity back to the electric company in exchange for credits at the same price you would normally pay for electricity.   At night when your panels are not producing electricity, you can absorb electricity back from the electric company in exchange for your credits.  In the end you can end up paying nothing for electricity, getting a credit, or a lower electricity bill.  You will also be helping the environment by producing your own electricity in a safe and clean way.
